Most of the time, my inbox is slammed with intentionally marketed to ideal potential clients reaching out wanting help on their business. Inbox 0 is a pipe dream. Amirite?
Occasionally though, I’ll get an email from an actual flesh and blood person who’s not an ideal client looking for guidance on starting a business. I love getting these emails, and the other day, it happened.
What’s the most challenging part of being a coach to online entrepreneurs?
This question on the most challenging part of being a coach to online entrepreneurs is one I’ve gotten before. But the stars had aligned the other day, and I was really fired up and had a detailed response. So I think you’ll find my answer helpful.
Get comfortable and pour yourself a coffee, tea, or margarita if that’s your thing (or it’s 5 o’clock somewhere) and let’s get started.
When you know you have the solution to someone’s problem, and that solution would transform their lives, you’re just itching to start helping them! But sometimes, they don’t realize that what they need is staring them in the face:
It’s confidence.
For me, the biggest struggle as an online business coach to entrepreneurs is having to turn people away because they aren’t ready for positive change and the transformation it brings. Usually, these are the people that need the most help.
I see their skills, and I believe in their abilities. But, worse yet, I also see the countless lives I know they can touch and improve.
Okay, you might be thinking, “Well, maybe they just don’t have the time or money to invest in themselves.”
Just nonsense. You see, it’s never an issue of time or money. They either don’t believe in coaching or mentoring, or they don’t believe in themselves.
Bottom line? A lack of belief is the most significant online coaching challenge I’ve ever faced. It hurts, but it happens.
But I’ve figured out a solution to overcoming it. At least, the part where they don’t believe in coaching and mentoring.
If you keep coming up against this obstacle in your business — lack of belief in what you’re offering — chances are you haven’t positioned yourself as an expert. And communicating your value needs some work.
Solution? Solidifying your value with a proven system that will give you and your clients ideal results.
Well, I can hand them my entire playbook. Fu*k, I can even do it for them. But it doesn’t mean sh$t if they don’t have confidence in their abilities, can take over, and deliver results.
I tell them exactly where confidence comes from — from DOING! Investing time, money, and resources to actually become the expert they want to be.
Becoming confident doesn’t happen on wishes and unicorn farts. It happens because they’ve put the time and effort into investing in themselves.
Why nobody cares and why you should care about that
Here’s another issue I come up against as a coach for online entrepreneurs — people who think they’re experts, and that entitles them to other people’s money and time.
All right, time to give it you straight:
If you think you’re an expert, you know all you need to, but you’re not where you want to be and don’t see the value in investing in your business . . . well, you’re worse off than a beginner.
If this is where your head is, I hate to break it to you but —
NOBODY CARES.
Nobody cares what you think you know. Nobody gives a sh$t about your accomplishments or your accolades. They only care about what you can do for them.
The people in this category who also have major confidence issues come down to all those years they spent focusing on their personal results and chasing money. Someone else can literally be at 0 and pass these types of individuals because the newbie:
So a word of advice if this is hitting a raw nerve — get over yourself and go all in. Then you’ll have a bigger purpose that drives you because you refuse to settle!
Once someone gets to this point in their entrepreneurship journey, that’s when I can finally coach and mentor them.
I only take on clients who are ready. For those who aren’t, I’ll still try to inspire, educate, connect, and engage with them. Everyone’s journey of self-discovery is different, and I want them to grow and succeed even if they’re not ready for the whole enchilada yet.
Elon Musk is onto something.
True, I support the entire journey for my entrepreneur clients. But as far as coaching and consulting go, I’m one of those all-in-let’s-get-to-work-on-the-impossible kinda people. So for us to jive, my consulting clients have to be at the same level so we can get to work, kickass, and take names together.
Elon Musk is onto something here. The competition that falls behind spends way too much time on meetings and other irrelevant sh$t instead of allocating that time to building a superior product.
I’m a selfless leader who wants to serve.
Well, if that’s true, but you’re too scared to take the next step because you lack the confidence to deliver, then how many people are you really serving?
Most people are only in this for the money. But the cash follows the results. So you don’t need to chase it. And you might get away with fooling people for a time, but people eventually figure out when someone is full of sh$t.
So the whole, I’m a selfless leader who wants to serve will be interpreted by your audience as real or fake based on the work you’ve done and the results you’ve achieved.
If you’re too afraid to invest in yourself, that translates into what you’re able to give as a leader!
Word of advice? Don’t fall into the trap of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You’re better than that.
I got the opportunity to pitch someone who definitely isn’t my ideal client. But I took this opportunity anyway because this person could literally save thousands of lives, and emotionally, I was compelled.
I gave my best performance ever. And they still decided not to work with me.
There are two lessons here that may seem contradictory, but hear me out.
We define our ideal clients for a reason. Focus on serving this one person, not everyone, with an exciting story.
If there’s an opportunity you find compelling and have the time and resources available to devote to it, seize it. No matter the outcome, if you’re intentional with your actions, you always win!
As you see, it’s a bit of a contradiction. But I knew this person probably wouldn’t decide to work with me. As I just mentioned, they simply lacked confidence in their abilities and were not ready to invest in themselves. However, I still took the opportunity for a different reason. It gave me the chance to learn about this particular industry in a very intimate and detailed way.
So, in a sense, I was playing the long game. And the education and insight I have now are priceless.
Although the industry is entirely different from the one I work and operate in, the lessons I learned from this experience can still be applied to my work.
Not gonna lie. Even though deep down I knew this wouldn’t work out, I wanted it to. But I went in with the right mindset and specific intentions.
I also had flashbacks of my early days when I would take on every client with a pulse who came my way. This experience reminded me of how exhausting trying to engage with people who aren’t a good fit for your business really is.
And lastly, I had to take time to reflect on where I’d come from and how my less-than-stellar past experiences led to my success today.
It’s not because I’m the smartest or the most qualified at what I do. It’s because my process of helping others avoid critical mistakes while handling the complexities of online business in a simple, strategic way is unlike anything else on the market.
Believe in yourself. Believe in the process. Nail down your goals, and be strategic and intentional with your moves. Get your mind out of the fear gutter and into the game. Half the battle is the one over your mind!
I inspire my core strategies to create breakthroughs for my clients from my “SCARS” – a genuine belief that my mistakes, miscues, and relentless pursuit to move the impossible mountains come with a series of cuts, bruises, and crashes. My experience enables and empowers me to walk along each of the individuals I serve.
